Garden Girl on a Misty Morning Walk

The setting for this painting is the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens in Richmond, Virginia. This was in early May, and the crepe myrtles were just starting to leaf out. It rained and misted all day, but we still enjoyed the gardens. The girl with the umbrella is my wife.

This is primarily a colored pencil painting, but other media were used as well. The under-painting was done with watercolor, gouache, and water-soluble colored pencils. I used oil pastel in some areas, either to smooth out the texture or to add more color when the paper wouldn’t accept any more colored pencil. The dimensions are 12″ x 12″, and the support is 140lb cold-pressed Arches watercolor paper.
